Claude Code v2.1.228: Hardened claude.ai-Synced Skills, Write Tool Overwrite Rules, and Self-Hosted Runner Fixes

Claude Code v2.1.228 hardens skills synced from claude.ai, lets newer models overwrite unread files with the Write tool, fails fast on bad Vertex AI credentials, and fixes self-hosted runner and cleanup bugs.

Claude Code v2.1.228 contains 18 changelog entries, most of them fixes. It hardens skills synced from claude.ai, aligns the Write tool’s overwrite rules with the Edit tool for newer models, and improves how cross-session messages, Vertex AI credential failures, and compaction progress are handled. Fixes cover redraw stalls, Git Bash detection on Windows, self-hosted runners, and cleanup routines that could delete memory-folder contents or plugin caches.

What’s New

Hardened Skills Synced from claude.ai

Skills synced from claude.ai no longer shadow local commands or MCP prompts, and their descriptions are sanitized and labeled. On your machine, their bodies don’t run ! commands or expand @ files.

Write Tool Overwrite Rules Match the Edit Tool

The Write tool now lets newer models overwrite an existing file they haven’t read this session, matching the Edit tool’s rules. Older models still require the read first.

Inline Cross-Session Messages

Cross-session messages now display the sender and body inline instead of a collapsed line, and messages to Remote Control sessions on other machines show your Remote Control session name as the sender.

Faster Vertex AI Credential Failures

Expired or missing Google Cloud credentials now fail within seconds instead of retrying for minutes.

Better Compaction Progress

The retry countdown and stall hint now appear during compaction, instead of only a progress bar.

Fixes and Improvements

Display and terminal

  • Interactive sessions no longer stop redrawing entirely, while the process keeps running, after a rare internal layout error.
  • Terminal title busy-spinner glyphs were updated to reduce tab-bar jitter on some terminals.

Windows

  • git / Git Bash is now found on Windows when Claude Code is launched from a parent folder of the git installation.

Sessions and messaging

  • /tui no longer reverts the session to an earlier model when /model had been changed since the last response.
  • Cross-session messaging no longer sometimes starts without an inbox in the first session after install or upgrade.
  • Remote Control /resume while connected no longer leaks the resumed conversation’s title or history into the connected session.

Self-hosted runners

  • claude self-hosted-runner sessions no longer fail on every fresh runner when the checkout hook fails for a repository the session doesn’t push to; that repository is now skipped with a warning.
  • Self-hosted runners no longer end sessions in the gap between a background task finishing and the follow-up turn starting.

Cleanup

  • Session cleanup no longer deletes contents inside a project’s memory folder.
  • Background plugin-cache cleanup no longer deletes a plugin’s cache when its only version is a symlinked development checkout.

Settings, skills, and auto mode

  • A marketplace entry redefined in a higher-precedence settings tier can no longer inherit another tier’s custom headers; marketplace entries now merge as whole entries.
  • The deferred-tools reminder is no longer occasionally sent to the model twice after a skill invocation.
  • The outdated note about auto mode sessions costing slightly more was removed from the first-use notice for Pro, Max, and Team plans.

How to Update

  1. Check your installed version: claude --version
  2. Update in place: claude update
  3. If you use skills synced from claude.ai, note that on your machine their bodies no longer run ! commands or expand @ files.
