Claude Code v2.1.278: Auto Mode Defaults to the Server-Side Classifier

Claude Code v2.1.278 makes the server-side classifier the auto mode default for Claude API and Enterprise users and on Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry and gateways, and adds an Auto mode server row to /status.

Claude Code v2.1.278 is a small release with two changelog entries, both about where auto mode’s classifier runs. It changes the default for several account types and providers, and adds a way to check which classifier your current session uses.

What’s New

Auto mode defaults to the server-side classifier

For Claude API and Enterprise users, and on Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry and gateways, auto mode now defaults to the server-side classifier, which does not charge for classifier overhead. On Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry and gateways you can opt out with CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_SERVER=0, and Claude Code warns you when it falls back to a billed path. The auto mode classifier billing documentation has the details.

Auto mode server row in /status

/status now includes an Auto mode server row showing whether the current session’s auto mode classifier runs on the server.

How to Update

  1. Check your installed version: claude --version
  2. Update in place: claude update
  3. If you use auto mode, run /status after updating to see whether your session’s classifier runs on the server. On Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry or a gateway, set CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_SERVER=0 if you want to opt out of the new default.
