Claude Code v2.1.73: modelOverrides, Permission-Prompt Freezes, and a Bedrock Model Default Change

Claude Code v2.1.73 adds a modelOverrides setting for custom provider model IDs, fixes freezes and 100% CPU loops from permission prompts, stops subagents being silently downgraded on Bedrock, Vertex and Foundry, and changes the default Opus model there to Opus 4.6.

Claude Code v2.1.73 has 26 changelog entries: 2 additions, 15 fixes, 6 improvements, 1 change, 1 deprecation, and 1 VS Code fix. If you run Claude Code on Bedrock, Vertex, or Microsoft Foundry, two of them change behaviour you should know about.

What’s New

  • modelOverrides maps model picker entries to custom provider model IDs, such as Bedrock inference profile ARNs.
  • SSL certificate failures now come with guidance. When OAuth login or a connectivity check fails behind a corporate proxy, the error points at NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS.

Changed Behaviour Worth Knowing

  • The default Opus model on Bedrock, Vertex, and Microsoft Foundry is now Opus 4.6, where it was Opus 4.1.
  • /output-style is deprecated — use /config. Output style is now fixed at session start, which allows better prompt caching.

Stability Fixes

  • Freezes and 100% CPU loops triggered by permission prompts for complex bash commands.
  • A deadlock when many skill files changed at once, such as during a git pull in a repository with a large .claude/skills/ directory.
  • Bash tool output being lost when several Claude Code sessions ran in the same project directory.
  • Background bash processes spawned by subagents not being cleaned up when the agent exited.
  • Voice mode session corruption when a slow connection overlapped a new recording.

Providers and Platforms

  • Subagents with model: opus, sonnet, or haiku were being silently downgraded to older model versions on Bedrock, Vertex, and Microsoft Foundry.
  • /loop was unavailable on Bedrock, Vertex, and Foundry, and when telemetry was disabled.
  • The Linux sandbox failed to start with “ripgrep (rg) not found” on native builds, and Linux native modules did not load on Amazon Linux 2 and other glibc 2.26 systems.
  • /heapdump on Windows failed with EEXIST when the Desktop folder already existed.
  • [VS Code] HTTP 400 errors for users behind proxies, or on Bedrock and Vertex with Claude 4.5 models.

Smaller Fixes and Improvements

/resume no longer shows the current session in the picker; /ide no longer crashes with onInstall is not defined while auto-installing the extension; SessionStart hooks no longer fire twice on --resume or --continue; JSON-output hooks no longer inject no-op system-reminder messages every turn; and a “media_type: Field required” API error on images received through Remote Control is fixed.

On the improvement side: Up arrow after interrupting Claude now restores the interrupted prompt and rewinds the conversation in one step; IDE detection is faster at startup; clipboard image pasting is faster on macOS; /effort works while Claude is responding, matching /model; voice mode retries transient connection failures during rapid push-to-talk re-press; and the Remote Control spawn mode prompt carries more context.

The full list is in the official changelog.
